nationalparkIn Whitman County, between Palouse and Pullman, WA there is a National Park that proves how truly beautiful Washington is. It is 298 acres and it was named after the Yakama tribe’s Chief Kamiakin. It is made up of mostly timberland, but the Kamiak Butte is a mountain that ranks very high on the majestic mountain scale, especially since it reaches approximately 1,000 feet above the wheat fields surrounding it.

Why the Kamiak Butte is Worth Seeing

This mountain is made of primarily reddish colored rocks that were once found in an ancient sea. You can still see grains of sand glittering out from the red rocks when the sun hits them just right. One of the most popular trails within the park is the Pine Ridge Trail, which takes hikers on a 3.5 mile loop. It begins at the main parking area and after you travel through an evergreen forest you will find an exposed ridge. From here, you will see awe-inspiring views of Palouse. There are also trails that can lead you up to the mountain’s highest point. When there, you will be on a rocky promontory on the western side and 3,641 feet above the world below.

There is reason to believe that the Kamiak Butte was once a part of a much larger mountain range. However, this mountain range was destroyed by lava flows millions of years ago. After it became a National Natural Landmark in 1979, it became one of only 600 parks to have earned the title.

Things to Do While Here

During the summer months, unless there is a drought, you can camp on the mountain. In special areas, there are picnic tables set up along with outdoor grilling areas. There is a playground and restrooms, covered shelters, and even an amphitheater. Total there seven sites for campers to take advantage of while using an RV and they have power and water hookups available. However, it is based on a first come, first serve. During a dry season, camping and grills will be closed down to the public because of the increase in fire potential.

Nature watching is something many people enjoy doing along these trails. There is a large variety of wildlife spread out all around the mountain. Some say that there are over 150 different types of animals both on the ground and flying above you at any given moment. If this doesn’t lead a person to love nature, nothing will.
